Do you know what’s the hardest part of writing? It is to start. You might feel confused and overwhelmed about what should I include and what to avoid. Having a clear and strong structured format makes the process of writing easier.
Like we saw in the video, today we are going to share with a quick guide on writing a statement of purpose famously known as SOP.
The blog will give you a rough idea of getting started and some useful tips. To know more, keep scrolling!
What is Statement Of Purpose?
The first thing that might pop in your mind is wondering what exactly is a statement of purpose. To make it simpler and easier for you to understand, an SOP is an essay along with your graduate school application that conveys to the admission committee about yourself.
- Who you are?
- Why you are applying to the specific university/college?
- What are your motives?
- Why you are an ideal candidate?
- What are your future goals?
These are some of the reasons that will convince the admission committee whether to consider your application or not. An SOP is an essay that will also predict about your objectives for graduate study.
It also reflects you as a person and candidate. It gauges your writing skills. You will be writing assignments and a lot more. We don’t want to scare you; we want you to prove yourself as a competent writer and excel in the career graph.
Here are some basic tips for writing SOP.
- Introduce Yourself
You are writing for the admission committee explaining why do you want to study at the university and college. But you also need to give a brief introduction about yourself.
Tell them what are your interests and what motivated you to write this SOP and apply in the university.
Always keep it short, simple, and precise. You are not writing an autobiography. Don’t spend too much time on it.
- Elaborate About Your Undergraduate/Graduate Career
You need to summarize about your career before applying for the university. Write down about your research, about your projects, and your responsibilities in the college. Make sure you don’t use heavy jargon words but write in the discipline.
If you have any kind of work experience that matches what you are willing to study at the university/college then write it down.
- Recent Activities
if you have worked before your graduation then write down in detail, about your roles, responsibility, and what you have learned.
- Academic Interests
In this section, you will be elaborating about your academic interests. Convince the faculty why you want to study at the university. Understand their discipline with the current times. You can look up on the internet about it.
Along with academics, mention down what are the other things that interest you in the university and what contribution you would want to give.
- Positive Note
Always end your SOP in a positive note. Let the faculty feel your excitement through your essay.
Let them know about your motivation, persistence, and why you are a potential candidate.
- Always write the SOP in the active voice. NO PASSIVE VOICE.
- Give examples. Don’t just say for the sake of it.
- Your SOP should be connected and interlinked.
- An ideal SOP is 500 to 1000 words. But, always ask your student visa counsellor about SOP information or just visit on the website to know about it.
