Canada Ranks Top In Accepting Immigrants, U.S.A Stands Sixth Rank
Every year global surveys are conducted to know about the countries accepting immigrants from across the world. This year Gallup an analytics and advisory company located in the USA performed a public opinion poll of 2019. Around 145 countries were included in the study and 1000 people from each country were involved in the survey.
The researchers contacted and surveyed whether they see the migrants living in their country marrying their family members or getting along as neighbours.
Later after completing the research Gallup curated an index of the answers. Each country scores from 0-9. The higher score, country accepting more immigrants. The lower score, the country is less amicable in accepting the immigrants.
Among the survey, Canada surveyed highest in welcoming immigrants across the world. It earned 8.6 scores out of 9 points in the Gallup’s Migrant Acceptance Index. USA ranked 7.95 and gained the sixth position in the poll.
In 2017 the last poll was conducted and since then both the countries have increased their rank. Over time the immigration policies have changed since then. While Canada is delighted to welcome immigrants, USA has reduced its number.
|Survey Question||Canadian acceptance||U.S. acceptance|
|migrants living in your country?||94%||87%|
|migrants living in your neighbourhood?||95%||90%|
|migrants marrying into your family?||91%||85%|
As per the 2017 poll results, the experts predict that there is some correlation between the political and migrant acceptance. The people who elected Trump as president were less welcoming immigrants whereas the people who elected Trudeau were accepting the migrants than those who did not. The company calculated the Migrant Acceptance Index for the correlation.
|Political Divides on Migration in Canada & USA|
|Migrant Acceptance Index U.S.||Migrant Acceptance Index Canada|
|Approve of Trump||7.10||Approve of Trudeau||8.73|
|Disapprove of Trump||8.59||Disapprove of Trudeau||8.21|
|Approve of country’s leadership||7.10||Approve of country’s leadership||8.59|
|Disapprove of country’s leadership||8.49||Disapprove of country’s leadership||8.31|
Besides the political affiliation, the research also states that there are differences in migrant acceptance based on gender, race, and religion. In Canada, there is no difference irrespective of factors like gender, race, and religion.
Another factor that played a major role in the Migrant Acceptance Index is the age. USA respondents were less accepting with the age while in Canada there are no differences by age group.
