Getting a permanent residency status is the best thing that can happen to an individual. The thrill of moving to a new country is exciting and overwhelming. You miss being around your parents and grandparents.
But now there is good news for you. Recently in an IRCC update, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be able to sponsor their parents and grandparents for migrating to Canada.
The update states that the immigration department will start accepting the interest of sponsors forms for the Parents and Grandparents Program on October 13, 12:00 p.m. EDT to 12:00 p.m. EST on November 3.
These are not the applications for the program but the residents can show interest to the immigration department of sponsoring their family. There will be a random selection from the sponsors. Upon the selection, they will be sending an invitation to submit their application within 60 days.
In 2020 IRCC decided to accept 10,000 applications. The target for 2021 is to accept 30,000 applications. Besides IRCC also have introduced a temporary public policy that will reduce the income requirement for the 2020 tax year to the minimum necessary income. The Coronavirus pandemic caused an adverse effect financially on the individuals.
Who Is Eligible to Sponsor Family through PGP?
Canadian citizens and permanent residents are eligible to sponsor the family members through PGP. Here are the basic eligibility criteria for the candidates.
- Sponsors must be 18 years old
- living in Canada
- Have Canadian citizenship or permanent residency status
- Finically stable to support the family members
The rules will vary for the candidates living in the province of Quebec.
Who Cannot Be Sponsored?
In certain scenarios, the candidates will not be able to sponsor family members. For instance:
- People who are in Jail
- Unpaid immigration loans
- Performance bonds
- Court-order family support payments
- Declared as bankruptcy
Who Can Be Sponsored?
The biological or adopted parents, grandparents of the Canadian citizens and residents are eligible. In case if applicants have step-parents due to divorce and separation, then it is possible to sponsor them. Brothers, sisters, half-siblings are eligible to be sponsored if they are dependent children under the age of 22.
To sponsor more than one family member and a couple, the applicant must provide the financial documents and meet the requirements. The additional documents will be the proof of funds, biometrics, medical examination, and a police certificate.
